This week has brought us the first round of semi-finals in both Champions- and Europa League, and what a week it’s been! In Champions League it is Liverpool and Real Madrid that has grip of the two spots in the final, and in Europa League Marseille and Atlético Madrid are in the lead.
Liverpool and Roma kicked off this great week of semi-finals with an exciting match. After having played 70 minutes of the game, Liverpool was in the lead with 5-0 and the result seemed to be pretty much settled. But Roma refused to give in, and managed to score two goals during the 10 last minutes. This means that Atlético is in the same position as they were against Barcelona in the quarter-finals, and they will move on to the final if they manage to beat Liverpool with 3 goals next week.
Bayern Munich – Real Madrid didn’t come with as many goals as the first Champions League game of the week, but it was an exciting match nonetheless. Bayern Munich created plenty of opportunities to score, but they had difficulties with actually netting the ball. Real Madrid managed to score two goals while Bayern had to settle with one, and the final result was set to 1-2.
Marseille and Atlético Madrid in control of Europa League
In Europa League, Marseille played against Red Bull Salzburg in a match that would end in a victory for the home team. Marseille scored the first goal of the match after only fifteen minutes, although subsequent replays suggested the ball had also touched Thauvin’s hand on its way into the net. Njie scored the second goal in the 62nd minute, and the final result was set to 2-0 in Marseille’s favour.
The second semi-final was a really interesting one – between two top european teams. Arsenal played against Atlético Madrid in an exciting match with a dramatic opening. Atlético’s Vrsaljko recieved a yellow card after only 75 seconds and recieved his other one seven minues later, which was the quickest yellow- and red card that any player has recieved this season. Although they were one man short for most of the match, Atlético did stand up well to Arsenal. The final score of the match was set to 1-1, which means advantage Atlético Madrid for an away goal.
