The 2020 UEFA European Championship will have the same format as the 2016 tournament, with 24 participating teams instead of 16. The 24 teams that will be playing in the final tournament will be decided through the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers – as well as through the brand new UEFA Nations League, which gives countries an optional way into the final tournament.
55 teams will take part of the qualifying process, with Kosovo taking part for the first time. The final tournament will be played in 12 countries, but none of the countries that will stage matches are automatically qualified. 20 teams will qualify through the standard qualifying tournament, and an additional 4 teams will qualify through the 2018/19 edition of Nations League.
Format of the qualification
For the first time ever, the 2020 UEFA Euros will be hosted by multiple countries. This means that none of the hosting countries are automatically qualified, and all 55 UEFA national teams will have to compete in the qualifiers for the 24 places in the finals tournament.
Group stage
The group stage of the main UEFA Euro qualifying process will be played on double match days in March, June, September, October and November 2019. The 55 participating teams have been divided into ten groups of five or six – where the to top two teams in each group will qualify to the final tournament.
Play-offs and Nations League
Following the group stage, there will also be UEFA Euro qualifying play-offs to take place in March 2020. These will determine the remaining 4 teams for the finals tournament. What’s new for this year’s edition of the qualifiers is that the play-offs isn’t based on the group stage. Instead, 16 teams will enter the play-offs based on their performance in the 2018/19 Nations League – which is a new addition to the UEFA tournaments.
Each group winner from Nations League will earn a spot into the semi-finals. If the group winner has already qualified through the group stage, the spot in the semi-final will go to the second best team in the same league. If all teams in one league should have qualified through the group stage, the semi final place in the play-offs will be given to the best team in the next lower league. The four best teams in the play-offs will secure the last four spots to the UEFA Euro 2020.
