The first round of the Champions League round of 16 is now over, and there are some really exciting returns waiting in March. PSG is in a strong position after defeating Manchester United in an away game, while Lyon – Barcelona and Liverpool – Bayern München is completely open after matches without any goals. In the other face offs – Roma, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Atleticó Madrid and Manchester City are ahed going into round two.
The round of 16 kicked off last tuesday with games between Roma – Porto and Manchester United – PSG. Roma came out victorious against Porto after two goals by Zaniolo in the second half. Porto reduced only three minutes after Roma’s second goal, but that was as close as they managed to get. That one goal on away grounds was however important for Porto, who still has the chance to turn things around in the second round. Manchester United had a rough night at Old Trafford, being defeated by PSG 0-2. That makes advancing to the round of 8 tough, especially since Paul Pogba saw the red in the 89th minute and will be suspended in round two.

Match day 2 came with a solid win for Tottenham at Wembley Stadium. Defeating Dortmund 3-0, the english team took a big step towards the round of 8. Playing against Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park is however not an easy task – and they won’t get anything for free in the Dortmund – Tottenham return on Tuesday 5th March. Ajax fell at home agains defending champions Real Madrid, after a close game with three goals at the end of the second half. The final result was 1-2, and it will all come down to the result of the second round.

Day three of the round of 16 turned out to be an interesting one – with no goals scored at all. Barcelona didn’t manage to poke hole in Lyon’s defence – although they managed to fire 25 shots compared to Lyon’s 5. Liverpool – Bayern Munich was a lot more even – with a ball possession of 49% against 51%. The returns, played on Wednesday March 13th, will for sure be real nail biters!

Atlético Madrid welcomed Juventus to Wanda Metropolitano on the last day of the first round – and came out with a victory. 2-0 was the final result after two goals in the last 15 minutes, and things are not looking promising for Ronaldo to secure his 6th Champions League title for his new club. The second match of the night was played at Veltins-Arena, where Schalke 04 played against Manchester City – and what City probably assumed to be a walk in the park turned out to be something completely different. At half time the score was 2-1 to the home team, after two penalties in Schalke’s favour during the last ten minutes. Man City did however rise again in the second half, and secured a 2-3 win after a goal by Raheem Sterling in the 90th minute. Schalke exceeded everyones expectations – so round two at Etihad Stadium is for sure something to look forward to!
