Liverpool was in their first Champions League final in eleven years, and the hopes were high in star-player Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian did however have to leave the field injured after only half an hour, leaving Liverpool without their top goalscorer. Real Madrid took advantage of the situation, and became Champions League champions for the third year in a row!
The 2018 Champions League final turned out to be an eventful one. Discussions beforehand was about wherther it would be Ronaldo or Salah would carry their teams to victory. That discussion did however die after only 30 minutes of the match. Liverpool’s Salah was injured after an entanglement with Sergio Ramos, and left the field in tears. The players injury was later said to not be as bad as first suspected – and he will most likely be able to play in the World Cup!
Benzema gave Real Madrid the lead after a mistake from Liverpool’s goalkeeper Karius in the 51st minute. Liverpool did however come with a quick reply, by an instand equalier in the 55th minue by Mane. The third goal in the match came through an astonishing overhead kick by Bale from 15 yards.
The 2-1 result stood until the 10 final minutes of the match, and Liverpool still had hopes of taking the match to overtime. But in the 83rd minute Liverpool’s hopes died as Bale scored his second goal for the night – after another mistake from goalkeeper Karius.
The final result was 3-1 to Real Madrid, who became the first team in history to win the Champions League title three years in a row! The Champions League final means the end of the season for the big leagues – and next up is the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which begins on June 14th!
